Shelby is a Professional Counselor who is licensed to practice in the states of Tennessee and Maine. Prior to joining the NOATC, Shelby spent the past four years working as a Clinical Counselor at the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA). There she worked with traditional and non-traditional students dealing with a variety of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Shelby completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at Springfield College, in Springfield, Massachusetts in 2012. After graduating, she went on to attend Husson University in Bangor, Maine for her Master of Science in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling. Prior to graduating with her Master’s degree, Shelby worked as a Master’s Level Intern Clinician at a children’s crisis unit and at UMA. These experiences greatly influenced her counseling process.
Shelby uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and the person-centered therapeutic approach in sessions, which stresses that the client is the expert on their own life and goals. She is trained in using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and has worked under the supervision of Dr. Mariaskin. Shelby approaches each client with a sense of curiosity and acceptance of their individual journey. Humor and transparency are her favorite tools to connect with clients!
Outside of work you can find her out on a walk or hike, attempting to recreate a Pinterest recipe, or re-watching an episode of Friends.
